horse called wonder

When I was six years old I made a bet with my uncles that I would eventually win with no contest.  They bet me $100 each that by the time I was sixteen I would be more interested in boys than horses.  By the time I was sixteen I was at the barn more than I was home (and that includes sleeping hours), I had yet to even notice there was another gender wandering the earth that I would one day find attractive, and I was $200 richer.  This obsession with horses – and obsession it was – started about as soon as I was able to formulate thoughts and was nurtured in those early years by a grandfather who was an excellent horseman, a friendship with Lauren who was equally infatuated, and the Thoroughbred series.  Thanks to Joanna Campbell, author of A Horse Called Wonder, that fateful first book that hooked me, I decided early on that I would be a jockey.  That dream was eventually slashed but not before I collected every Breyer my allowance would cover and spent months creating and documenting imaginary horses with imaginary bloodlines that I dutifully kept organized in an accordion file folder.

I spent last weekend in San Diego with the express purpose of shooting a wedding with the talented Justin, and the added bonus of a whole day at the Del Mar Racetrack.  The six year old in me was in heaven.

I’ve known Erin, a talented writer since I interned for a magazine in California years ago.  She’s been a faithful blog reader and avid supporter of my photography work and has said if I’m ever in San Fransisco that she wanted to do a shoot.  A few weeks ago I was there for a wedding, so we took the opportunity to do a shoot with her Jack Russells, Stella + Joey and her horse, Kermit.  The location in the hills outside the city was gorgeous, so gorgeous I didn’t mind the spitting rain or occasional cloud cover. This was one of those shoots that was so much fun it didn’t for a second feel like work.

And a parting favorite:

Lisa [Equine Services]

You might remember my first shoot with Lisa Lancaster.  She works with dogs and horses offering acupuncture, chiropractic, biopuncture and laser treatments to promote a more holistic approach to animal health.  [She also can trim + shoe horses].  I love watching her work + love documenting her process.

[Check out her website for more info].

Clyde

Another way overdue session: Christine + her horse, Clyde.  I spent the entirety of my childhood, teenage and college years completely obsessed with horses.  I no longer have a horse or the desire to ride other people’s horses (I think that connection has largely been replaced with my connection to Roux), but I definitely still identify very much with the relationship between a girl and her horse.  I loved documenting Christine + Clyde’s  harmonious relationship.

*On a side note: I realize the links to specific posts are all wacky.  If you think this blog is supposed to be written in Times New Roman, you are most definitely not seeing it correctly.  The main page definitely displays correctly, and I am working to figure out what’s up with the specific entry links.  Sorry guys!

Stacia has started an equine rescue–the result of coming across several ponies and horses that desperately needed her help.  I think it’s truly awesome how much Stacia has done to help these guys–there are six total–and it’s probably safe to say that none of them would be alive today if it weren’t for Stacia.  Her current plan is to pair up with a friend of hers who does dog rescue (mostly hounds), but there isn’t a website up yet.  (When there is, I’ll update this).

There’s quite the cast of characters, so get ready.

First, the only real horse.  An ex-racing Thoroughbred, Giselle has a fractured pelvis and had a grim outlook when Stacia found her.  With a lot of rehabilitation, Giselle has gained weight and is a totally happy, healthy and unbelievably friendly.  Giselle lives with two mules, Megan & Madeline (that’s a lot of m’s, isn’t it?).  I have a new fondness for mules; I love their goofyness, steadfastness, big-heartedness.

The other three equines are miniature ponies; they are all totally adorable.  I was more than a little tempted to sneak one in the back of my Subaru.  At first Alex might be mad, but once he realized he no longer had to mow the lawn I think he may eventually accept a mini pony in the backyard.

In no particular order–

Was anyone else totally obsessed with the Misty of Chincoteague series as a kid?  I was.  This little pony on the lower left is actually Misty’s daughter, which made me feel sure her name must be Stormy.  Her name actually is Molly, which is an adorable name.  It’s just that I don’t have any recollection of a Molly in the Chincoteague series.

And this is Rain, who appeared in the previous post.  Rain, who almost moved into my backyard. Sweet, easy to handle, more than happy to let us adorn her with lilacs.  (That’s Stacia’s daughter, Bella, is in these photos with Rain.)
