oh, ella

I may not always concern myself with my own attire (see: grandpa pants), but I take my dog’s neck wear seriously. I can’t escape the notion that her collar directly reflects my taste.  Whenever I get the itch to upgrade Roux’s neck wear I start my search at Ella Dish. There is never a lack of new eye candy, and even their most conventional designs (stripes, animal print) are done fabulously well.

So here’s where you come in: the folks at Ella Dish have graciously offered to give away a collar and lead to a fortuitous Rouxby blog reader.  And here’s how it’s gonna work:

1. Visit the Ella Dish site and scope out your pick.

2. Post a comment here with your top choice and a quick explanation of why this particular collar would accurately broadcast your and/or your dog’s personality.  The explanation can be completely inane.  In fact, the more absurd the better because Sam is going to be the judge.

3. Entries will close exactly one week from today on Thursday, May 13 at 6:00 pm Mountain Standard Time.

4. Sam will choose one winner at her sole discretion.  The winner will be announced next Friday, along with an essay by Sam explaining her choice.

Have fun with this and feel free to pass it on!

My right bicep and right index finger are recovering from a long weekend of shooting.  Saturday was the Saving Giants book release + gallery show in Denver.  Roux was invited and dressed for the occasion.  Those who were there can attest to the fact that she was interested only in gleaning cheese out of the hands of unsuspecting party guests.

(The super cool sculpture exhibition is the artwork of Craig Robb).

All the wonderful organizers from Big Dogs Huge Paws did a really fabulous job putting the event together, and I met some really wonderful new people.

The book is available for order in either softcover or hardcover (they are both lovely, but the hardcover is beyond beautiful).  I am really excited about this project and really believe it can both help support BDHP and spread the word about the importance of dog rescue.

And this, my friends, is the book in its entirety:

a rescue story

I started shooting for this project last November and I can’t tell you how good it feels to wrap it up and see it completed.  Five months of shooting + endless hours of post processing + seven consecutive days of nothing but book design has finally culminated in the finished project of the full color Saving Giants : A Rescue Story, soon to be available in softcover or hardback.

I am really excited about this book.  Donating my time + energy to rescue dogs will always be an integral part of who I am and consequently how I run my business.  This book is the culmination of the people who donate their lives to saving these dogs and of those super hero dogs themselves.  I hope it conveys the meaning I encountered every time I met with a volunteer or a new family and their fosters or adopted dogs.

If you are in the Denver area, you should think about coming to the release party which, of course, benefits the rescue.  [Get more info on the event Facebook page or on the Big Dogs Huge Paws site].  Also, if you run a dog-related business anywhere and are interested in carrying this book, please let me know!

I’m only able to post a sneak peek of the a few spreads of the book, but once it’s officially released I’ll post the whole thing here along with information on how to buy a copy.  For now, if you want a copy email me and I’ll put you in touch with the folks at the rescue.

Just the briefest of brief previews:

I promise the whole book will be up soon!

Also, in the spirit of dog rescues… The fabulously talented Sarah of Sarah Beth Photography recently put up a photo journalistic post documenting her experience working with a canine rescue on a reservation.  Her writing is beautiful, the photography is stunning, and the story is important.  Check it out.  (And while you’re at it check out the rest of her work, it’s fab!)

Bookworm

Legend has it I loved books long before I could read them.  I am a reader too, but I love books regardless of what’s inside of them. I even relish the way they smell; new books, old books, doesn’t matter. So I guess it’s no surprise that I love designing books for my clients as much as I do.  Plus, there is something so wonderful about seeing your work out of the screen, in real space, tangible.

Kathy + Sam’s book just arrived and it’s lovely.

Paint

Lauren (mother-of-Waldo, zebra, artiste extraordinaire) is now painting commissioned portraits.  I like to siphon finished paintings and nonchalantly hang them on our walls as if they’re here to stay.  But I promise if you hire Lauren to do a portrait I’ll let her ship it to you.  Eventually.

She can work off of photos you send, or for any of my clients, photos I’ve taken.  Prices are crazy reasonable, starting at $50 for an 8×10, going up to $300 for 30×40.  If you’re interested, or want more information email Lauren:

Also, Lauren says she’ll ship or hand deliver.  And since she didn’t specify where to, anyone who hires her and does not live in Colorado should make it a point to ask for hand delivery.
