Happy Happy Halloween

I hadn’t really planned on dressing Roux up. This happens every year, where I think I’ll just pass on Halloween because it’s too much effort, then Halloween rolls around and everyone is getting into it so I scramble to throw a costume together. Luckily I have this really stellar backup costume that I’ve had for years. My dad’s girlfriend is really into Halloween and put this thing together herself. (Hi, Dee!) It’s hard to say exactly what it is – it’s a bright orange 80′s prom dress with multiple layers of add-on taffeta and chiffon in brilliant magentas, purples and greens. It’s definitely something, though. I think I really am going to bow out of dressing up this year, but Roux really wanted to be a part of the holiday. And conveniently, she fit into my default costume.

And yes, I did indeed put purple eyeshadow on my dog. But may I say I did so with extreme caution so as not to get any in her eyes (hence the reason the eyeshadow doesn’t come all way the way down her eyelid), and I washed it off immediately afterwards. And I used hypoallergenic shadow. It may still qualify as dog abuse, but only in a minor degree, and even then mostly just because she had to sit still long enough for me to put it on and long enough for me to photograph her in her makeup and fancy dress. Oh, the humiliation!

Erin, Brad + Mazie (and Grace Eileen)

When Erin asked me to do maternity photos she was already 36 weeks pregnant, so time was a’ tickin. Our first shoot fell on one of the cloudiest days Denver has probably ever seen, and while there were a few good shots, I really felt like the downer weather didn’t portray their obvious exuberance about this pregnancy. Something about pregnancy demands sunshine if you ask me. So we rescheduled, and I just got around to finishing editing the photos. Meanwhile, Erin and Brad just got around to actually having the baby, so congratulations to both of them on the safe arrival of Grace Eileen!

And of course no photo shoot is really complete without a cameo dog appearance. Brad + Erin’s dog, Mazie is truly adorable, and loves to be in the spotlight.

Tucker, Jackson + Ella

When this whole photography business was in its earliest stages, Alyssa was one of the most supportive people around; one of Denver Dog Photography’s first fans. I worked in the same office as she did, so I’d wonder by her desk every now and again to get some insight on what my next step with the biznass should be. She made me feel not only like my work was good, but she also reinforced that it was okay to charge money for good work. I’ve always respected Alyssa’s success (she’s a real estate agent), so hearing her perspective on my business was hugely important to my perception of whether it could work as a legitimate source of income or not.

Alyssa also has a hilarious Boston Terrier (Tucker) and a really beautiful 4-year-old daughter (Ella), so when she asked if I could do a session with both, I was pretty jazzed. (For those of you who don’t already know this about me – I use the word ‘jazzed’ a lot. Like most senior citizens, I think it’s a good word).

Tucker’s photos show him exactly as he is – a hysterically pompous little dog (this dog has one heck of an ego, and I mean that in the best possible way).

Tucker, aka “Killer”:

Unlike most dogs, Tucker is not at all motivated by treats. No, Tucker prefers the almighty pine cone. If you can scrummage up exactly the right pine cone then you’ve unlocked the secret to getting a still, focused subject. Just look at that degree of concentration!

Jackson is Alyssa’s mom’s dog, who was exceptionally camera shy. I did get a couple shots of Jackson, but they were hard-won. He’s a lovely old character.

Ella isn’t the type to fall for the typical “kid” jokes; I tried everything in my bag to get her to crack a smile to no avail. But that’s ok, because Ella did tell me some pretty good stories, the kind of stories only a 4-year-old can tell well. So these photos aren’t going to give you an idea of what she looks like when she giggles, but you sure as heck are going to get a range of facial expressions you can expect to see when Ella’s telling you one of her stories. And that’s just as important, if you ask me.

Along with storytelling, Ella takes sword fighting, her muscles and giving her grandpa a pound very seriously.

Thanks Alyssa for the opportunity to shoot these guys!

Lindsay + Jake

I first met Lindsay at the dog park, which was great because then when she asked me to do her + Jake’s engagement photos, I felt like I sort of already knew what I was getting myself into. I hadn’t met Jake, but I was pretty sure that Lindsay was the laid back type, which is definitely my style. Jake was immediately likable too, and that likability factor was multiplied by how into each other they were. They’re one of those couples you only have to know for five minutes to know that they’re 100% meant to be.

We did the shoot at Riverfront Park, downtown Denver, which is an awesome place to shoot. It was an absolutely perfect fall day with brilliant sunshine. It’s a well-known doggie mecca and after I finished the shoot with Jake + Lindsay I came across this teeny 11-week-old Boxer puppy named Roxy. I couldn’t resist pulling the camera out for a couple shots. (I’m sure someone out there has a logical explanation for this, but Boxer puppies are WAY smaller than other puppies, which is crazy considering they grow up to be about the same size as my dog… I swear, Roux was never this small).
