Punk

She mentioned she was feeling left out and since the photo booth was still up I thought, what the hell, give the kid a shot.

P for Party

Last week was my birthday, an event that usually passes by without a lot of hoopla.  This year, though, my birthday coincided with Lauren’s moving out, a combination of lifetime events that served to remind us we never had that housewarming party last summer. We decided it would be unacceptable for two people who earn their living artistically to throw a bash without an appropriately imaginative theme, and because neither of us are particular practical people we chose purple.  We literally didn’t have a single object or item of clothing that was any shade of violet.  But we sent the invitation after a couple of glasses of wine on a Tuesday night, and the thus the Purple Party was born. (And henceforth we spent a lot of time doing reconnaissance missions at every Goodwill in the Denver metro area).

I have always loved a photo booth done well, and because Lauren’s room would be vacated before the party it seemed obvious that her room should be turned into one.  Logistically and technically speaking there are a lot of things I would change about this the second time around.  I didn’t want to man the booth for the entire night (also, seems to me a cardinal rule of a good photo booth is privacy) so we left our boozy friends with a remote.  The downside to this was that the camera got shifted every now and again, and at one point the shutter speed got turned way up and about 500 photos were lost.  (I have had a lot of fun imagining the kind of debauchery those photos contained, which I may or may not have been party to). Also, lights got shifted which means some of the photos are much darker than I’d have liked, photographically speaking.

All of that mumbo jumbo aside, the results are amazing.  Because most of the photos are in some way inappropriate, and because I like most of these people and would like to remain friends with them I am limiting what I put on the blog to the more prudent shots of me + friends whom I’m assuming won’t mind. Enjoy :)

Harlow + Mike

Liz has been one of the single biggest supporters + fans of my photography business since day one.  I have a tremendous amount of professional respect for her, and we have a serious love for dogs in common.  I photographed her rehearsal dinner before her wedding, and took photos of her lovely Lab, Hannah, who has since passed away.  Liz + her husband, Phil, recently decided they were ready to take the puppy leap and heroically got not one, but two 8 week old puppies: a Chocolate Lab [Harlow] + an English Bulldog [aptly named Mike].  They are as smitten with these puppies as you will be once you see the photos, and are thus totally unfazed by all the chaos that inevitably accompanies the arrival of two two-month old puppies.

Morgan

Alex + Stacy are the kind of people that either make you totally jealous or totally inspired.  They are both gorgeous, brilliant + successful.  So far they seem to be diving into parenthood with their trademark gusto. The way they talk about their baby is simultaneously refreshing and totally heartwarming.  And I have to say, in all truthfulness, that Morgan is literally one of the most beautiful newborns I’ve ever seen.

A couple quick ones of the non-human babies:

Help Haiti Blog Challenge

I came across the Help Haiti Blog Challenge while reading Anastasia’s blog yesterday (one of my favorites), and am totally into the project.  It’s a very cool way to help Haiti, both for me as a photographer and for my next client.  I am going to donate the entire sitting fee from the next session I book to Haiti (probably through the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund).  Contact me if you’re interested, or you know someone who might be (info@rouxby.com).  It can be any kind of session–dogs, kids, engagement.

And for you photographers out there–check out Kelly Diel’s blog for information on how you can participate.
