Bella + 9

For about a year I’ve wanted to photograph the whole puppy process: the birth + the eight weeks leading up to when they go home.  Partly I liked the idea of documenting a process over the span of two months; partly I liked the idea of having a good excuse to hang out with brand new puppies week after week.

The project fell into place with the Elick family + their Golden Retriever, Bella.  They added my phone number to the list of numbers to call when Bella went into labor and graciously had me over just about every week thereafter until the puppies went home in early February.  (I missed weeks five and seven).

Put aside the fact that baby Golden Retrievers are irresistible, it was also fascinating from the perspective of someone who is utterly fascinated by dog behavior.  Instinct is an amazing thing, as firm and unwavering as gravity.  That Bella knew exactly what to do without ever having seen it is mind blowing.  Somehow the abundance of technology makes me forget how extraordinary nature is.

The other part of this process that totally blew me away was how the puppies go from being hamster-like blobs to actual individuals in the span of just a couple weeks.  I know there’s evidence on both sides of the age-old nature versus nurture argument, but holy cow these little dogs each had their own distinct personalities as soon as they were coordinated enough to exhibit them.

So here’s a comprehensive slideshow of Bella + her babies. It is 5 minutes, 18 seconds long. I know that far surpasses the 30 second attention span most people have for watching slideshows online, but I couldn’t slim it down any more than this. Eight weeks of puppies is hard to turn into 5 minutes.

A big thank you to the Elicks, and to Bella.

G

G is Grady’s nickname.

According to Urban Dictionary there are three definitions for the slang:

1. A gangster : That’s a real G.

2. A thousand dollars : Let me borrow a G, yo.

3. A title of endearment : What up, G?

It’s safe to say Grady fulfills definitions one and two.

Sam + G:

Smokey + Jesse James

I have always loved working with the Mile High Weimaraner Rescue, and was more than happy to do this shoot of two of their adoptable seniors: Jesse James + Smokey.  (Links will send you to their info on the Mile  High Weim Rescue page).

Both dogs have been in a foster home for too long and really need to find fabulous forever homes.  They are both beyond sweet.  If you know anyone who might be interested, send them on to MHWR!

Colfax

At the inception of my photo habit I had pretty much no idea what I was doing.  I was not nearly as intimidated by the great pool of knowledge I’d just dipped a toe into as I probably should have been and jumped in headfirst. I superglued my camera knob on M, got myself a lens with no autofocus and worked out the kinks of daily shooting in a totally nonconformist way and with a maniacal obsession with perfection.

Now that I am pretty successful at getting well-lit shots during well-lit times of the day I find myself at the gateway of a new challenge: shooting at night.  I imagine if I can conquer this, or at least encounter some success, I’ll be better prepared for the occasional basement I find myself in when Fluffy refuses come up the stairs.  Inspired by people like Jerry Yoon + Nate and Jaclyn of the Image is Found, I have long been meaning to get out and apply my totally uneducated but highly inspired self to the task.

I found a friend willing to traverse Colfax Avenue after dark, a location I picked for its dinginess (an adjective I use with the utmost affection), but also a location most people would probably prefer to avoid at 8pm on a Wednesday evening.  My friend was a good sport though, and I would label the shoot a moderate success, meaning I ended up with about three shots I remotely liked and a burning desire to camp out on Colfax every night until I can capture the crack addicts and neon motel signs with absolute precision.  I do have a modicum of logic (on occasion), and realize I should probably wait for another group outing.  Until then here’s one of the shots I’m fond of:
